Little Hinges Swing Big Doors

Welcome to this week’s newsletter.

This week I picked up my first ever pair of glasses.

I’m 45 years old and have had 20-20 vision all my life, until now!

At first I was really upset that I no longer had ‘perfect’ eyesight. I’d always been really smug that everyone in my family (including my daughter) wore glasses, and I didn’t.

And now I was just another statistic with glasses.

But after my appointment at the opticians the 2-week wait I had before I could pick them up was really frustrating.

I started to notice that I was struggling to read small text on my phone, and when I tried to thread a needle to stitch a button back onto my trousers, I couldn’t see clearly enough to do it.

Now I have actually got a very small prescription, and I only need to wear them when I’m reading/on my phone/pc, but this tiny bit of magnification has made a massive difference to the ease of my every day life.

I’ve said before how I read a lot, and its amazing how much easier it is to read when the letters are in focus!!

But it’s got me thinking, what other things do I ‘struggle on with’ when there is actually a much easier solution to the way I’m doing it?

In today’s email:

What Little changes can you make to make a BIG difference?

Just like the droplet of water makes big ripples in a pool, little changes in the way you do things can make a big difference to your life.

Are there things that can be done or utilised to your advantage to make your life easier?

I’m 100% sure that there will be at least a couple of things that the answer to that question is yes.

When you’re working at your laptop/pc do you use shortcuts to your most used websites?

Are they organised in a way that you can access any one of them in less than 5 seconds? Or do you have to go scrolling through a super long list of favourites to find the one you need?

Are you using AI to sort through your emails to remove all the junk and just leave you with the important stuff? (this one is on my to-do list this week- I’ll feedback how I get on).

Do you find yourself sending the same email/text/messenger responses to frequently asked questions? Or do you have these templated or better still automated?

When you go to change a bin, do you keep the new bin bags inside the bottom of the bin so its super easy to put a new bag in? (I love this one for saving time searching for the right bin bag that is in a drawer somewhere else in the house).

Around my computer screen I have post-it notes with my most used numbers/ codes and details that I need to reference most frequently, so I don’t need to dig them out or search in my phone for them.

Will it work for you?

Take a couple of minutes to think about the things you do that have little hurdles that stop a task from being quick, easy and pain-free.

It doesn’t need to be a big thing at all. Just shaving off a few minutes of a task here and there add up to lots of minutes (and sometimes hours) overall.

My steps for success

  • Look at the tasks that you do most regularly.

  • Pay attention to the processes you go through.

  • Is there anything that can be made easier by doing it differently?

  • Is there a piece of software or a gadget that can do the work quicker than you can that will mean you don’t have to do something yourself?

  • Apply this to your business and your personal life, you may be surprised how many unnecessary things you are doing to get the job done.

As always implementation is the key to success. The aim of these emails is to get you taking ACTION.
