Working ON your business, not IN your business

Unlike many business owners out there, the majority of us in the wellness and fitness industry love doing the actual job - teaching the yoga/ pilates, treating the client, making the class plans, doing the choreography etc (The IN your business stuff).

Unfortunately, just being good at this part of your business isn’t enough to make your business successful. You need to spend time on the ‘other stuff’ (the ON your business stuff), the marketing, the accounts, the business strategies etc.

In today’s email:

CAN YOU FIND 90 MINUTES EVERY DAY?

Back in February of this year I came across the concept of 90-minutes. Spending 90-minutes every day, working on your business to move it forward. I thought it sounded good so I dutifully put lots of chunks of 90-minutes in my calendar and went about my day.

I thought putting more than one 90-minute chunk in each day meant I would be even more productive. I had them at all different times of the day whenever I had a slot big enough.

The problem was although they were my diary I wasn’t really doing them. Yes I was at my desk, and yes I was working, but I had no particular plan of what I was doing in each chunk, and very often I’d end up doing something that wasn’t particularly productive, like replying to emails or jumping from one task to another without finishing any individual task.

At the beginning of September I decided to switch up the way I do my 90-minutes, I used to go to the gym twice a week at 6:30am meaning I got up at 6am. So I decided instead to get up at 6am Monday to Friday and be at my desk until 7:30am and go to the gym later in the day. I now plan what I’m going to do the night before, so I don’t waste any time working out what needs to be done.

My house is quiet, my phone is quiet and my brain is at its best, I’ve found I have got so much more done in this past 6 weeks than I ever got done in multiple 90-minutes before, and the best thing for me is, if I have a really busy day at the studio or with family stuff, I know that at the very least I got 90-minutes of good quality work on my business done that day.

I have been the most productive I have ever been in the last 6 weeks and I’m excited by how far I’m going to be able to push my business by continuing to implement this practice.

Will it work for you?

The key with this as with anything is how you implement things. For the most part of this year I would say I was doing my 90-minutes a day, however in hindsight I didn’t really start doing it until I did it consistently at the same time each day.

My steps for success

  • Set a regular time each day to do your 90-minutes (at a time that works for your brain)

  • Make a plan the night before about what you’re going to do

  • Turn off your notifications on your phone/laptop

  • Work on one project until completion - (this may take a few days)

Implementation is the key to success.

“Take action on your plan immediately. Do something. Do anything. An average plan vigorously executed is far better than a brilliant plan on which nothing is done. For you to achieve any kind of success, execution is everything”.
